Spirit of the Forest (1981)

Artist's Statement

"Trees and Roots" was inspired by a search for my South African roots and the environment of trees and roots which surrounded me in my new home.

Soft muted colours. Majestic, mysterious. Rising up wing-like from the forest floor. I attempted to capture the spirit and atmosphere of trees penetrated by shafts of light, through which one could imagine sky, hills, grasses, flowers, shady secretive places still waiting to be discovered under the brooding branches and foliage of the forest. The physical light is a metaphor for spiritual light.
